Hey Maria--According to the USDA, $458/month for a family of two is a Low-cost food plan. You can go here to see the agency's "thrifty," "low-cost," "modereate," and "liberal" plans for different families. Pretty interesting stuff. Those numbers are for conventional food. You're doing well, IMO, spending the same on organic, for a family of three! My spending is equivalent to the "thrifty" plan for our family of four and we eat organic, local food, though I'm working to get that down even more, too. We're putting in our first big garden in years (thanks to my improved health) and that's going to help immensely.

I don't think my friends think $400-$500 is a lot for 95% organic food - they think it's a lot for food, period. Most of them are eligible for WIC, so very low income, and don't even have $400 to spend on groceries a month. It's becoming one of my missions to figure out how to get mostly organic, healthy food for under $200 a month. Wish me luck! Oh, and I'll definitely post about it!

Glad to see you again! I have to admit we don't buy alot of organic foods. I know people who do though. You are right, it is a balance. Even if you don't eat organic it costs more money to eat healthy, but I'd rather eat healthy than cheap and unhealthy.

I understand where you are coming from. I know that my recycling everything I can doesn't save the world, anymore than my daughter and mine's recent decision to become vegetarians...but I know that I am being true to what I am feeling and am making a difference in our life. We feel good about the very small thing we can do. We have started buying organic and it just feels good to be eating something that I know doesn't have chemicals in it that I wouldn't want to put in my family's body.
So glad to see you are back for a post :)

Yea for true cost economics! I am with you, and I love that the more we do it ourselves, and remove ourselves from retail food, the more we can frugally do so as well.
