DIY: haircuts

Until this past weekend, I have been avoiding what I now see as the inevitable: cutting Seth’s hair. It was halfway down his back, golden silk that curled slightly at the ends. As beautiful as it was though, it was starting to get really annoying to take care of. He was constantly complaining about it being in his face, he’d get yogurt in it, and it managed to get stuck underneath his friend Soren’s bum last week, which was pretty much the last straw. Oh, and my tolerance level of Seth being mistaken for a girl had completely diminished to the point that I would just allow people to think he was a girl. So, after watching a rather dated hair-cut video loaned to me by Soren’s mother, I decided that this weekend was it.

I was surprised at how easy it was, after I got over my initial feeling like I was about to destroy a beautiful work of art. Despite the chunk behind his ear that I got a little snip-happy with, it looks pretty decent. And, as with everything, practice makes perfect, so I imagine that the more I do it the better I will become. Of course, my husband doesn’t trust me completely yet (I’m good at giving a military haircut with the clippers that he no longer needs or wants), so he’s going to get it trimmed at a hair salon this afternoon.

His long locks, before the cut:

Here’s the resulting first haircut (with Nathan, who occupied him with a book of frogs):

Now, I have to deal with a crazy case of bed head!

  • What a great cut!!!! You did really well and he looks adorable!

  • Pretty decent? Pretty decent??!!! Mama, you rocked that haircut! It looks totally like you went to one of those little kid’s professional places – very, very cute :-)

I’m pretty good at hacking away at my own hair and can do the clippers cuts for hubby, but I have yet to be brave enough to cut the kids’ hair. Would you believe Jillian has never had a hair cut? And Max’s well … I’m not ready for the long locks to be gone just yet … but I know their days are numbered.

Job well done! And, one more talent to add to your DIY credits :-)

  • Thanks Kara, your compliment really makes my day! I know what you mean about not wanting to cut Max’s hair yet. I’m sure you’ll do a great job when the time comes!
