Inspired by Rebecca, author of the blog “Know Thy Food“, I’ve decided to go grocery store-free. I’ve been accumulating bulk beans, frozen meats, grains, and other pantry items, arranged to have a box of produce delivered every week, and will go pick up my milk and eggs from a friend, a trip that is a playdate for Seth/grown up conversation for moi. A local grocery store offers the first three deliveries for free (saving me $9.95, and really the only reason I can justify using it) , so I’m expecting some more things this afternoon to finish off my pantry and freezer stocking. I’m surprised at just how much my little freezer can hold (it currently contains: 10 lbs of salmon, a loaf of bread, a ham hock, 4 chickens, a quart of ice cream, and a container of ice cubes – and it’s only three quarters full).
I’m excited to try this out, and see if it makes a difference in terms of trips to the store that invariably end up tempting us to bring more unhealthy fare into the house. And, of course, this means we will be driving the car even less, which means gas-savings. Nathan has been talking about getting rid of the car altogether, but I’m not sure I’m ready to take that drastic step just yet.
This also happens to fit in with Nathan’s new hours – they are finally cutting back to a regular 40 hour work week, which means we will be living on less than we’ve gotten used to the last couple of months.
So, along with the challenge of going no ‘poo (that I wrote about here), going grocery store-free is my other challenge for the month of July.

We’re going back to Organics To You for now. My husband and I decided that while we’d like to get produce through your co-op, the drive didn’t make it worth it (what with gas prices on the rise).
Yes, I’ve been neglecting my forums, since we’ve been spending most of our days outside lately…I’d like to come to another event too…maybe we’ll come to that 4th of July picnic, since we can walk there…
