I’m a little peeved at Nathan right now. Although he’s got better credit history than I do, he really does not know how to shop and cannot be trusted in a grocery store. Here’s what happened:
We had gotten most of the light bulbs we needed to outfit our home with energy efficiency, except for 3 that we needed for the dining room light fixture (we had bought one to see if it was the right size because we didn’t know what it needed). It fit, so we decided he’d go back to get the other three. Seth had gone to bed early yesterday, so off he went. I had some coupons for some Endangered Species Chocolate bars, so I gave them to him, and told him to pick up some chocolate for our chocolate jones. I actually insisted that he put them in his wallet to use them…but he said he wouldn’t forget. More on that later. I thought that he was just going to run into the hardware store, which is really close by – less than a mile away, and then stop at a local, overpriced club grocery store to get them. But he proved that he listens to me, and went to another local grocery sore I like to shop at. He came home with the light bulbs and two bags of groceries, spending over $80. And, he forgot to use the coupons! Argh! He is a whimsical shopper and bought a plantain (for some experiemental recipe, I guess) and a bottle of cream that has no nutritional information and looks a little suspect (I don’t care how cute the calf on the front of it is). He also bought some strawberries, which is good, since we love them and they are in season, and a few other things that I’m forgetting at the moment. He said he had a little bit of sticker shock at the check out. Yeah, go figure. This is why I do all the shopping. I told him he was a loose cannon and that from now on, he was not allowed to shop, ever. Period.
Of course, like I am one to talk. I was the one who just had to have that kid’s road carpet at Goodwill this weekend, and he was the one with the wherewithal to say, “let’s get out of here before we get carried away.” I think because we have all this “extra” money from our tax return, we’re both having the money-burning-a-hole-in-the-pocket feeling. Fortunately, he gets paid weekly, so the money we spent this past weekend hasn’t dipped into the tax return money. But still…a little frugality goes a long way. We’re still both works in progess.

Maria, I had to tell my husband about this post! After I finished the story, my husband laughed and said that you had just been set up. Now your husband never has to run any shopping errands for you! Because apparently that’s how my husband’s brain works.

That is so funny, Hope! I never thought of it that way…I’m sort of a control-freak, and like to do the shopping – Nathan has agreed to look after Seth during my weekend shopping trips, which means I get an hour and a half to myself!
